EXPANSION PLANS AHEAD FOR WIRRAL TRAMWAY?
Wirral Tramway – Sunday 21st March 2010

As we have previously reported on British Trams Online, Merseytravel are to take on a 99 year lease of the Wirral Tramway in Birkenhead. Tramways and Urban Transit have now provided further details as to what the future may hold the line.

It is planned the existing route (Woodside Ferry to Old Colonial) will be upgraded and Merseytravel’s development proposal would see it extended to Seacombe (Wallasey) where the line would terminate at the Seacombe Ferry Terminal next to the space themed attraction – Spaceport.

Further development would also be possible in extending the tramway the other way through Hamilton Square and on to Birkenhead Park. An additional fleet of trams for everyday use would be required for these extensions.

Neil Scales, Merseytravel Director General, said: “We have seen the proven benefits of operations such as the F line in San Francisco and the Portland Streetcar. Merseytravel has the legal capacity to take on the responsibility of a statutory street tramway and has the skill, imagination and commitment from in-house and consultant teams to maintain and develop it.”

British Trams Online is an enthusiast run website for enthusiasts. It should be able to be viewed at all screen resolutions but I do advise you that it is probably best at 1024x768. The site is owned, maintained (and in the main written) by Gareth Prior. Any comments or suggestions please email.
