TIE VOW TO GET TOUGH ON CONTRACTORS
Edinburgh Trams – Sunday 21st March 2010

Tie have vowed to get tough with Bilfinger Berger – part of the consortium building the Edinburgh Tramway – as the major dispute between the two parties comes to a head. Sources are quoted in the Edinburgh Evening News as saying that things are coming to a head, and that everything will be resolved one way or another within the next few months. As part of this strategy tie have bought in a “tough-talking” construction expert to fight their corner.

Tony Rush – who has previously held top jobs at Balfour Beatty and Barr Construction – has been brought in to co-ordinate tie’s “contractual strategy”. This strategy is believed to be a “no compromise” approach where they will be insisting that the contract is upheld in its entirety with no further negotiation on the design detail. It is also being reported that no work will be undertaken on the on-street sections until such a time as the dispute is resolved.

tie are also planning to impose fines of £1 million a month on the contractors if the new deadline of June 2012 is not met. However, the contractors believe their legal advice tells them tie will not be able to do this.
