LATEST METROLINK PERFORMANCE FIGURES RELEASED
Manchester Metrolink – Sunday 29th March 2009

The latest performance figures of Manchester Metrolink are now available on the GMITA website and were presented to the committee for approval on 27th March 2009. The report covers period 10 from Monday 5th January and Sunday 1st February 2009. Read on for a summary of the report.

Operated Mileage
Performance during this period was 98.70% as measured by Operated Mileage. The Moving Annual Average of 98.74% has remained above 98% for the 20th consecutive period. The majority of miles lost during the period were due to vehicle availability accounting for 75%.

Vehicle Availability
During this period the total vehicle availability against the morning peak target (29 trams) was 98.5%. The average tram availability in the weekday morning peak was 24 out of 29. The main impacts upon tram availability were severe weather conditions, road traffic collisions and tram failures.

Trams out of service during the period
Two trams were out of service during period 10 (although since 1001 has returned to use). 2001 remains out of service long term with one issue remaining. GMPTE and Stagecoach Metrolink continue to work together to resolve this to enable the tram to return to service. Also out of service during this period was 1001 following damage sustained in a collision with a bus on 1st November 2008. The chance was also taken for “Metrolink Special Projects” modification work to undertaken during the repair period. Two vehicles which had been out of service long term returned to service during the period.

Incidents During the Period
There were eight major incidents during the period which caused delays in service of over 30 minutes which impacted on performance. These incidents were:
* 8th January 2009 – A road traffic collision not involving Metrolink resulted in a car blocking the tracks on Eccles New Road. Services were turned at Weaste until the car was removed 30 minutes later.
* 12th January 2009 – A vehicle lost traction power between Pomona and Cornbrook, and a technician was required to recover it and remove it from service.
* 13th January 2009 – At 1045 there was a major United Utilities power failure in the City Centre which caused all signals on the Altrincham line to fail and a loss of control of all the points. A service operated Bury-Victoria and Eccles-Salford Quays. Power was restored at 1240.
* 16th January 2009 – A vehicle failed at Anchorage with a loss of air. Eccles services terminated at Salford Quays for 45 minutes until vehicle technicians were dispatched and the fault rectified.
* 21st January 2009 – A vehicle lost air at Sale.
* 22nd January 2009 – A vehicle lost all power at Navigation Road. A technician was dispatched and the failed vehicle was rescued. Altrincham services were turned at Timperley.
* 26th January 2009 – At 1800 Greater Manchester Police stopped a tram at St Peter’s Square as they believed there was a suspect on board, and told the driver to keep the doors closed until further officers arrived. Full services resumed at 1831.

Complaints
Complaints have decreased significantly during this period. Only 610 complaints were received (a 34.5% decrease from period 9) and of these 35% related to Ticket Machines and 35% due to service disruption.
