A two day public exhibition is to be held on Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th March at The Lowry in Salford Quays for people to find out more about the proposals for a new Metrolink service to mediacity:uk.
The extension would only be a quarter of a mile (0.4km) and work would likely commence in 2009 although a Transport and Works Act order has yet to be submitted (this will be done after the consultation has been concluded).
David Leather, Chief Executive of GMPTE, said: The Metrolink extension to mediacity:uk is part of a major expansion of the network, which will also include new lines to Oldham and Rochdale, Chorlton in South Manchester, and Droylsden in Tameside. The Salford Quays extension will start near the Harbour City stop on the Eccles line and end at a new tram stop in mediacity:uk. We want to find out what people think about our plans to help us put together an application for a Transport and Works Act order. GMPTE staff will be at The Lowry next week to answer any questions about the new Metrolink service to mediacity:uk and to record comments. I hope local residents and workers will visit the gallery to tell us what they think about the proposals."
Four additional trams have already been ordered for the proposed services to mediacity:uk which will be the new nothern home of the BBC and should create 15,500 jobs and it is proposed that services will commence in summer 2010.
* A similar event will be held at the GMPTE Online information centre next to the Piccadilly Gardens Metrolink stop on Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th March.
