DISUSED FREIGHT LINE FOR METRO EXTENSION?
Midland Metro – Sunday 16th March 2008

The disused freight only line from Stourbridge to Lichfield via Walsall could be resurrected to enable the Wednesbury to Brierley Hill Midland Metro extension to be firmly on track. This follows the likelihood that the local councils are unlikely to get TIF money because they refuse to back the congestion charging needed as part of this package.

Money may also be able to be raised by the local councils by selling land alongside to developers – and this would be worth more if a Metro line was in operation.

Cllr Roger Lawrence, leader of Wolverhampton City Council, commented: “The business rates go straight to central government and so we will point this out and ask for appropriate funding. All indications are that this would bring a substantial boost to the economy. Wolverhampton was not going to get its part of the extension until phase two under the plans for the TIF. But with our Interchange project we might be able to get the funding for that sooner so that people can take a tram right up to the railway station.”

British Trams Online is an enthusiast run website for enthusiasts. It should be able to be viewed at all screen resolutions but I do advise you that it is probably best at 1024x768. The site is owned, maintained (and in the main written) by Gareth Prior. Any comments or suggestions please email.
