A major milestone for Nottingham Express Transit’s Line One was reached on Tuesday 9th June when the 50 millionth passenger was carried since services began in March 2004.
Cllr Jane Urquhart, Nottingham City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Transport and Area Working, said: “The 50 million tram trips demonstrate what a success NET Line One has been. The tram has helped to put Nottingham firmly on the map as a dynamic, modern city which boasts excellent public transport. The proposals for NET Phase Two will build on this success bringing even more benefits to the city and region.”
A couple from Woodborough won 50 days of free tram travel as part of the celebrations. Michael and Frances Batt were picked at random for the prize during the day and were also presented with a bottle of champagne.
Since the line opened it is claimed that the following benefits have reached the city:
* Contributed to a 20% increase in peak period public transport use in the north-west corridor into the city centre
* Generated £100 million of new money for the East Midlands economy
* At a cost of £200 million it was one of the largest and most innovative PFI funded projects
* Has encouraged industrial and commercial developments in Nottingham and Hucknall
