GMITA GIVE GO-AHEAD FOR EAST LANCS METROLINK STUDY Officials from the GMITA have given the go-ahead for a study to take place over extending Metrolink services onto the heritage East Lancashire Railway between Bury and Rawtentsall. The study will look at the financial implications of running commuter services on the line, whilst at the same time keeping the heritage nature alive.
One of the main proposals to be looked at is for services to run from Rawtenstall to Bury on the East Lancashire Railway and then join up with the Metrolink line to travel through to central Manchester. The study will look at the best options for the development and also how much it would likely cost – reported to be around £30 million.
Cllr Keith Whitmore, GMITA Vice Chairman, said: “We are committed to improving transport in the east Lancashire and west Rochdale areas, but need to give careful consideration to exactly how we go about doing that. That is where the study comes in. But one thing is very clear — we recognise the importance of preserving the heritage of the East Lancashire Railway and will be meeting with officials from the railway soon to discuss all these issues.”

| British Trams Online is an enthusiast run website for enthusiasts. It should be able to be viewed at all screen resolutions but I do advise you that it is probably best at 1024x768. The site is owned, maintained (and in the main written) by Gareth Prior. Any comments or suggestions please email. |
