FIRST TRAM TRACKS LAID IN PRINCES STREET
Edinburgh Tram Project – Sunday 14th June 2009

The first tracks have been laid in Princes Street, central Edinburgh just days after they were delivered onto site. The rails were put into place and this work is now likely to continue until November, when the road is expected to reopen to traffic.

The tracks were moved from the storage compound at Leith. Steven Bell, Tram Project Director, said: “This is a very significant day for us. There is now tangible evidence of track laying – people will be able to see sleepers and rails being laid this week as we work along Princes Street”.

Cllr Gordon Mackenzie, Transport Convener on the City of Edinburgh Council, added: “This is an extremely significant milestone for the Edinburgh Tram Project. Retailers, businesses and visitors to Princes Street can now see physical evidence that we have taken another major step towards the delivery of a fast and efficient integrated transportation system for Edinburgh."

Once track laying has been completed over each stretch at least half the width of Princes Street is likely to be opened to pedestrians. Currently pedestrians only have access to a narrow pavement on the shop side.

British Trams Online is an enthusiast run website for enthusiasts. It should be able to be viewed at all screen resolutions but I do advise you that it is probably best at 1024x768. The site is owned, maintained (and in the main written) by Gareth Prior. Any comments or suggestions please email.
