CAMPAIGN FOR BIKES TO BE ALLOWED ON METROLINK
Manchester Metrolink – Sunday 22nd June 2008

Friends of the Earth have launched a campaign – “Love Your Bike” – to allow bikes, currently banned, to be allowed onto Manchester Metrolink. They want to see the next set of trams to be built for the forthcoming extensions have cycle storage bays.

Campaigners went onto the trams in Manchester with cardboard bikes saying that the trams will be a wasted opportunity if bikes are banned from the vehicles.

David Coleman, from Manchester Friends of Earth, said: “We want to show that it is possible to get a bike on a tram by taking on cardboard life-size cut outs of cycles. It's illogical that prams, push chairs and wheelchairs are allowed onboard when bikes aren't - unless they are folded up."

Philip Purdy, Metrolink Director at GMPTE, said: “We are currently reviewing the policy that people can't take bikes on the trams by asking the public for their opinions and by investigating the impact allowing bikes on trams would have on all our passengers. We will put forward a recommendation to Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority once this review is complete."

British Trams Online is an enthusiast run website for enthusiasts. It should be able to be viewed at all screen resolutions but I do advise you that it is probably best at 1024x768. The site is owned, maintained (and in the main written) by Gareth Prior. Any comments or suggestions please email.
