NET PHASE TWO PUBLIC INQUIRY DATE SET
Nottingham Express Transit – Sunday 15th July 2007

The Department for Transport have revealed that there will indeed be a Public Inquiry into Phase Two of Nottingham Express Transit – as was widely expected and is normal in a project of this sort.

The inquiry will commence on Tuesday 6th November 2007 at 1000 at the Nottingham Britannia Hotel. The Secretary of State for Transport has announced that Robert Barker from the Planning Inspectorate will be the Chair of the inquiry. It is likely that the Inquiry will last for up to six weeks during which time evidence will be heard from all stakeholders. Mr Barker will then report his findings to Ruth Kelly, Secretary of State for Transport.

NET Development Manager, Chris Deas, said: “The Public Inquiry is a key step in taking NET Phase Two forward. The opportunity for Stakeholders to present their views on the proposals to an independent Inspector is a fair and effective way for people to have their say.”

All stakeholders who took part in the Consultation process will now have received acknowledgment from the DfT as well as guidance about the next step in the process.

It has also been revealed this week that one of the objectors to the scheme is Rushcliffe Borough Council. Following the consultation period the Council have decided to lodge a holding objection to the Clifton route. They claim that they are in favour of good public transport but that there are alternative and cheaper systems to the tram. In addition they say the route via Wilford would damage wildlife areas and construction and operational noise would be unacceptable to local residents.

A spokesman from Nottingham Express Transit said they were not concerned by the objection as at this stage of the process a holding objection was fairly standard.
