BURY LINE SHUT FOR NEXT PHASE OF METROLINK UPGRADES
Manchester Metrolink – Sunday 22nd July 2007

The next stage of the Manchester Metrolink track upgrades commences from Monday 23rd July – and this stage will see the entire Bury line from Victoria through to Bury Interchange closed until 12th September.

Paul Griffiths, GMPTE’s Interim Projects Director, said: “We're now nearly halfway through the project to replace worn-out track on the Bury and Altrincham Metrolink lines, and the work is running to schedule. We've timed the upgrades to take place during the summer when fewer people would be using the network. Some of the track is more than 50 years old and I hope passengers will appreciate the need for this to be done. Tram rides will be much smoother, quieter and more reliable when the work's finished, benefiting both passengers and people living near the line."

Replacement bus services will operate during the closure with some calling at all stops and others being “limited stop” to provide a faster service. All replacement bus services will run to and from Shudehill Interchange. Passengers ca buy discounted Metrolink return tickets and season tickets, although the prices have reportedly caused confusion on board the buses.

For the next week trams will continue to operate from Piccadilly to Old Trafford, Piccadilly to Eccles and Piccadilly to Victoria but from Friday 27th July the Cornbrook to Old Trafford section will also be shut for further work on the Altrincham line.

* Full details on the replacement bus services and all about the trackwork can be found here.

As part of the trackwork on the Bury line a new crossover had to be added at Crumpsall to enable short workings to operate when the line terminated here for a few weeks. This view shows a close up of the crossover.
