METROLINK UPGRADES PHASE 3 COMMENCES FROM MONDAY
Manchester Metrolink – Sunday 1st July 2007
Work will start on Phase 3 of the Manchester Metrolink upgrades from tomorrow (Monday 2 July), with the Altrincham line being affected for the first time.
This phase of work will see no trams operating between Altrincham and Old Trafford and will continue until Sunday 22 July. During the work replacement buses will be in operation and passengers from Altrincham, Navigation Road and Timperley stops are being encouraged to travel on Northern Rail services from Altrincham, Navigation Road or Hale stations.
Cllr Matthew Colledge, GMPTA’s spokesperson for Trafford, commented: “The track on the Altrincham line is now more than 50 years old in some places and so needs replacing. I hope passengers who use the line will be prepared to put up with a couple of months of disruption while this work takes place. I'm pleased we've been able to provide extra carriages on some rush-hour trains, and that we've reached an agreement with Northern Rail for Metrolink passengers to use train services to reach Manchester. When the work's finished, tram journeys will be much smoother, quieter and more reliable. I'm sure both passengers and people living alongside the track will appreciate the difference."
Metrolink return and season tickets will be available at a discounted rate throughout the summer and will be valid on all replacement services. The replacement bus services will see up to 28 buses an hour and train services during rush hour on this route will be strengthened in carriages.
Work continues between Bury and Crumpsall throughout this period with trams only running Piccadilly to Crumpsall, Piccadilly to Eccles and Piccadilly to Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, engineering work today (Sunday 1 July) saw no trams from Altrincham to Trafford Bar. A replacement bus service was in operation as usual.
