FURTHER DETAILS REVEALED ON LEITH UTILITY DIVERSION WORK
Trams for Edinburgh – Thursday 5th July 2007

As reported last week work is to start on the utility diversion for the Trams for Edinburgh project in Leith on Monday (9 July). Further details have now been revealed on how the work will take place and locals have been sent information packs.

300 homes around Ocean Drive and Tower Place in Leith have been sent information packs about the disruption they are likely to feel for the next nine weeks. Temporary traffic lights are to be installed in the affected area and residents have been warned they may be some disruption to their gas, water and electricity supplies.

Willie Gallagher, chairman of tie, commented: “Once the cabinet secretary confirmed that the work on the tram scheme was to proceed, TIE's delivery team moved quickly to commence the important utility work required. The utility diversion work is being carried out by Alfred McAlpine and will begin on July 9 at Tower Street and Commercial Wharf in Leith. We will be announcing the complete utility diversion programme and timescales for the other phases in due course. My team and I will be working hard to ensure that during this period Edinburgh remains open for business and that disruption is minimised wherever possible."

However, of course, there has been some moaning from local residents about the disruption likely and also the whole idea of trams. Margaret Moffett, from Leith Links Community Council, said: “People I have spoken to still can't see how roads like Leith Walk and Constitution Street can have trams and cars on them. I know they've been there in the past but in those days there were far fewer cars on the road. People are also saying to me that they wouldn't get off the bus down here just to get a tram into town when there's only going to be one stop on Princes Street."
