RAIB LAUNCH INVESTIGATION INTO TRAMLINK INCIDENT
Croydon Tramlink – Sunday 15th July 2007

The RAIB have launched an investigation into an incident when a young man got his arm trapped in a tram door on Croydon Tramlink – and the tram then started to move off.

The incident happened at 1550 on 15 June 2007 at Wellesley Road in Croydon as the tram was preparing to depart. As the doors were shutting the young man approached the tram and placed his hand in the vicinity of the door. The door then closed and the tram stated to move off with the young man walking and then running alongside the tram for around 15 metres before pulling his arm clear.

The young man pulled his arm clear and swiftly left the stop. A passenger who witnessed the incident operated the tram alarm and the tram came to a stop before it had reached the end of the stop platform.

The RAIB’s investigation is to look at the operation and maintenance of passenger doors on the Croydon Tram system in order to ascertain whether there is risk of passengers being trapped by a door and dragged along by a tram.
