LEEDS 345 WINS AWARD FOR RESTORATION
Crich Tramway Village – Sunday 22nd July 2007
The Crich Tramway Village – home of the National Tramway Museum – have been rewarded for the hard work involved in the restoration of Leeds 345 by winning an award at the Heritage Railway Association Carriage & Wagon Awards.
The award category was the Best Self-Propelled Vehicle and was granted for the outstanding restoration of 345 after three years in the workshops at the Museum.
The award was collected by the current President of the Tramway Museum Society, Keith Terry. Mr Terry commented: “It is a real honour to receive this award. It is a testament to the skill and dedication of the Workshop team of staff and volunteers and to the generosity of the sponsors who raised the necessary funds to make it all possible; the restoration costs were met through the fundraising work of supporting bodies”
Dame Margaret Weston, President of the Heritage Railway Association, presented the award at their meeting in Leeds back on Saturday 2nd June. The judges in the category said that the tram demonstrated “a wealth of period detail which had been painstakingly recreated.”
Peter Bird, Rolling Stock Engineer at Crich, said: “Leeds 345 was rescued from the scrap-heap by enthusiasts back in the ‘50s, but had a long wait until funds were in place restore it. The workshop team and I are thrilled to receive this award on behalf of everyone who worked on the project.”
