The extension of the Docklands Light Railway from King George V under the River Thames to Woolwich Arsenal opened on Saturday 10th January, with a new revised timetable commencing operation on the same day. The timetable now in operation remains a “modified” service because of an intensive period of upgrade works before a return to a full timetable in the spring.
The new Woolwich Arsenal station completes the London City Airport line and has two platforms but is unfortunately located underground. The DLR station is located next to the national rail station with two entrances (Green’s End and Woolwich New Road). The majority of services from Woolwich Arsenal will initially go to Bank (with a few peak extras as far as Blackwall).
The revised service will see the following frequencies on Mondays to Fridays:
* Bank-Lewisham – every 5 minutes (0630-1930), every 10 minutes (0530-0630 and 2100-0030) and every 5-10 minutes (1930-2100)
* Stratford-Lewisham – every 5 minutes (0630-1000) and every 10 minutes (1600-1930)
* Stratford-Crossharbour – every 10 minutes (0530-0630 and 1000-2100)
* Stratford-Canary Wharf – every 10 minutes (1000-1600 and 1930-0030)
* Stratford-Bow Church – every 10 minutes (0530-0630)
* Bank-Woolwich Arsenal – every 10 minutes (0530-0030)
* Blackwall-Woolwich Arsenal – every 20 minutes (0745-0915 and 1700-1830)
* Canning Town-Beckton – every 5 minutes (1000-1600) and every 10 minutes (0530-1000 and 1600-0030)
Further details of the timetable is available on the official DLR website here – this is a PDF file.
Two shots from the first day of operation at Woolwich Arsenal station on 10th January 2009. Firstly we have new unit 109 waiting to depart with a service to Bank.
And in this shot we have 72 in the other platform.
