COUNCILLORS REBEL OVER TRAMS Two Councillors – one from the Conservatives and one from Labour – have spoken out against the tram plan for Edinburgh. Cllr Kate MacKenzie, Conservative Councillor for Almond, has been suspended by her party after she refused to back the project whilst Cllr Eric Barry, Labour (Colinton/Fairmilehead) spoke out but still voted in favour at the pre-Christmas vote.
Cllr MacKenzie remained outside the Council chamber on the final vote for approving the business case, and this was against the policy of her party. She had been told she had to be in the room for the vote but as she wasn’t she has had her party whip removed. Cllr MacKenzie will not be able to attend group meetings or votes for the next three months and had had to move out of the Conservative office.
Cllr Barry called the scheme a substitute bus service but still voted in favour as he said the alterative was to do nothing. He said: “We are getting so little for all this money. It's our own fault for setting our sights too low. For some reason, we are too afraid to go back to Holyrood and ask for more money."

| British Trams Online is an enthusiast run website for enthusiasts. It should be able to be viewed at all screen resolutions but I do advise you that it is probably best at 1024x768. The site is owned, maintained (and in the main written) by Gareth Prior. Any comments or suggestions please email. |
