DOUGLAS HORSE TRAMWAY RECORDS 2007 LOSS
Douglas Horse Tramway – Sunday 13th January 2008

It has been revealed that the Douglas Horse Tramway recorded a loss of £271,331 during 2007. This had led to repeated calls for something to be done about the tramway, ensuring costs can be saved to save the historic transport system for years to come.

Cllr Ritchie McNicholl has called on savings to be made by axing the conductors in the past, but these having been rejected because of health and safety concerns. Cllr McNicholl said: “'If the leisure services committee does not do something about it, the service will go. I am pro-tram, not anti. I would not like to see the service go. People in this council chamber are putting forward reasonable ideas to stem the flow of cash from the service.'

Other Councillors agreed with Cllr McNicholl that something has to be done to stem the flow of the losses with some thinking an honesty box instead of conductors should be introduced along with a revised service.

However, Cllr Gwen Corkish reiterated the health and safety risk of not having conductors saying that if a horse becomes distressed or needed attention the driver has to remain seated holding the reins.
