Gallery 492: Metrolink Airport extension opens - 3rd November 2014

On Monday 3rd November 2014 the latest extension on Manchester Metrolink welcomed its first passengers with the line between St Werburgh's Road and Manchester Airport fully opened over a year early. On the first day a special double unit departed Cornbrook at 0500 for the Airport (all services to and from the Airport will initially only run as far as Cornbrook due to capacity constraints) with a hardy bunch of Metrolink first day regulars joining the tram along the route (after the first day this service was to be formed of a single LRV and would run out of service to the Airport). This collection of photos actually starts in late October when the shadow running was in full swing and also includes images from Saturday 1st November when a trial service for local residents was offered along part of the line. And of course we also feature extensively on that first day including images of the very first service to the Airport.

Photographs in this collection were taken by Keith Chadbourne, Steve Hyde and Steve Kemp.
