Gallery 462: Edinburgh Trams Opens - May 2014 |
On 31st May 2014 the moment we have been waiting for finally arrived - Edinburgh Trams opened to the public. It may have been late (very late) and the project may have been beset by problems but at last Scotland has welcomed trams back onto the streets of its capital city for the first time since 1956. 275 was the tram chosen to do the honours of the very first trip departing Gyle Centre at 0500 for Edinburgh City Centre with a very full load as the people of Edinburgh and further afield took the chance to enjoy the trams. This collection of photos actually starts off on the day before public services began - 30th May - as final testing was underway and then continues with extensive coverage from the first day and then we have further images from day two and also the following few days of operation. We have attempted to include these photos in chronological order but it isn't always easy as some of the clocks on the cameras are not showing the correct time! Please note that some of the captions are also rather brief as it is difficult to know where some of the photos were taken on a system I haven't yet had chance to visit and also the position of the numbers of the trams isn't very helpful!
Photographs in this collection were taken by Ian Buck, Jane Buck, Martin Hague, John Hampton, Bob Hodges, Steve Kemp, Alasdair Macfarlane & Neil Simpson. |
