SHARE OF BUSINESS TAXES TO FUND LINE 1B? The Sunday Herald have reported that in order to keep Line 1b on track Edinburgh City Council may ask the Scottish Government for a share of the future business taxes produced by the regeneration of the Leith Docks. It is expected this share would be up to £60 million.
Dave Anderson, Director of City Development at the Council, commented: “If Line 1B doesn't go ahead now, it's unlikely to go ahead for a very long time. TIE Transport Initiative for Edinburgh has been set up especially to deliver the tram. The intention was always to deliver a single network, not a single line."
Meetings have already been held between Council officials and officials at the Scottish Government and they have been asked to produce a feasibility study on the matter. Currently central government take 95% of business taxes whereas on the continent in places such as Germany only 65% is taken by central government with up to 35% being taken by local government.
* Edinburgh City Council look set to give themselves as long as possible to secure funding for the line with the decision on axing the line set to be delayed for four months, reports the Edinburgh Evening News.
