COUNCIL CLAIM BIRMINGHAM AIRPORT EXPANSION WILL HELP TRAM
Midland Metro – Sunday 21st December 2008

Councillors on Birmingham City Council have said that the plans to expand Birmingham International Airport should be a catalyst to revive the plans for an extension for Midland Metro. Solihull Council approved plans to expand the runway at the Airport this week and discussions have now started to see how extra people can be transported there from the city centre.

Likely benefits of the expanded runway were discussed at a meeting of the City Council’s regeneration scrutiny committee with Mike Laverty (Advantage West Midlands Chief Executive) and Veronica Docherty (Birmingham’s Head of Economic Strategy) present.

Cllr Jerry Evans, Liberal Democrat for Sparkbrook, said: “We are talking about improving transport to the airport to get an increasing number of people to and from the airport and north Solihull. Surely the Metro would be the right way to go. They should scrap other Metro plans and make this a priority.”
