METROLINK HIT BY CHAOS
Manchester Metrolink – Sunday 23rd December 2007
There was chaos on Manchester Metrolink on Friday 21st December when low temperatures saw failures and a computer failure in the control room added to the problems.
A computer failure in the control room caused signalling problems which meant trams from the south could not head into the centre of Manchester. This was followed by a tram from the north (1009) being halted because of frozen overhead lines at 0720. Another tram (1017 ) had to be sent to shunt this tram into Victoria Station.
A spokeswoman from Serco Metrolink said: “It was minus seven this morning which I think is the most severe weather we have had this winter season. We sent out an ice breaker to warm up the overhead lines before the service started, but unfortunately today, they were freezing over again which is what caused the tram to break down. We would like to apologise to customers for any delay to their journey caused by fault or the severe weather conditions."
The computer fault was caused by a technical fault at a city centre sub station. All signals were reset by 0735 allowing the trams to start moving again.
