CROYDON ARENA “WILL SEE TRAM CHAOS”
Croydon Tramlink – Sunday 16th December 2007

The Croydon Guardian are reporting that an agreement has been reached for Tramlink over the proposed Croydon Arena. This would see Wellesley Road tramstop become alighting only during events and only one extra tram for events of up to 9,000 people attending. Needless to say many have complained that this would not be adequate.

The agreement has been reached between Arrowcroft – who are hoping to develop the Arena next to East Croydon station – and Tramtrack Croydon Limited as plans move a step forward. Tramtrack have proposed an extra tram an hour when more than 9,000 people are at the Arena (with two extra trams an hour for 10,000 and three for any events higher). They have also suggested that Wellesley Road – which will be the nearest tramstop – should be for alighting only with people not being able to board a tram here for an exit hour.

Roger Harding, General Manager of Tramtrack, said: “It is an outline of the sort of thing we might have to do when the arena gets a little closer but we are going to sit down with the management and we are going to agree a final position if the arena is given the go ahead."

Cllr Andrew Price, from Addiscombe, commented: “It seems ridiculous - this is just clutching at straws. To suggest that one extra tram an hour - which only carries approximately 100 people [try doubling that figure] - is pathetic and it seems like a recipe for disaster."

There is still no guarantee that the Arena will ever be constructed with many locals against the plan and Roger Harding even saying in the past the transport infrastructure is not suitable for a major arena.
