BLACKPOOL TRAMWAY CROSSINGS TO BE AXED
Blackpool & Fleetwood Tramway – Sunday 2nd December 2007
It has been revealed that as part of the trackwork being undertaken on the Blackpool and Fleetwood Tramway a number of pedestrian crossings will be closed between Cabin and Little Bispham. Many of these gated crossings not at tram stops do not meet modern tramway safety best practice and so will be removed as part of the track upgrades.
The removal of the crossings will not only improve safety but will help to improve journey times and comfort for passengers. Pedestrians will also benefit as every crossing at a tram stop will be retained and improved as part of the works. These crossings are already lit to ensure visibility, and will now have level surfaces provided to improve safety and accessibility.
Cllr Maxine Callow, Blackpool Council Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Tourism, said: “As part of the works to modernise the tramway and meet current safety standards some of the crossings that lie between tram stops need to be closed to rationalise the number of crossings along the route. This will help to improve journey times for passengers and increase everyone’s safety on the tracks. However, only those crossings that fall between tram stops will be removed. All existing tram stops will have an improved crossing point for pedestrians.”
