HORSE TRAM “NAPPIES” TRIALLED
Douglas Horse Tramway – Sunday 26th April 2009

The nappies – or “Animal Waste Receptacles” to give them their official name – for horses on the Douglas Horse Tramway have been trialled, and it has been declared a success. The nappies have been specially designed and it is hoped that £20,000 per year will be saved in street cleaning costs by using them.

The trial took place on Wednesday 22nd April when the nappy was attached to tram horse Mark for runs along Douglas Promenade. After the trials a number of minor adjustments were found to be needed including the fact that not all manure was caught and the height and angle of the nappy needed to be altered.

Further tests are due to take place when tram services resume on 11th May, although some horses are likely to need training to have the nappy attached to them. It is planned that all horses will be fitted from 2010.

* Douglas Council have officially said the object should not be called a nappy but rather an Animal Waste Receptacle.

British Trams Online is an enthusiast run website for enthusiasts. It should be able to be viewed at all screen resolutions but I do advise you that it is probably best at 1024x768. The site is owned, maintained (and in the main written) by Gareth Prior. Any comments or suggestions please email.
